CMSC Lane Currents

Sept. 28/06 edition

Coach's Corner

Welcome back!

I trust everyone had a fantastic summer, full of activity in the sun. I've enjoyed seeing many faces back at the pool, we all seem ready for another swimming season.

Our club mandate is to "provide competitive swimming training and competitive opportunities for the members." Your three coaches, myself, Matt and Lisa, are ready to work! It was brought to my attention by a board member, that with our club mandate in mind, it would be helpful if swimmers with specific goals for their swimming season would share them with their coach. The coaches agree, and are ready to help you achieve these goals. Please do keep in mind, that we are coaching a number of people, and will do our best to individualize workouts only when it is possible.

The swim meet schedule has not been finalized for the year, but we do know Nationals are in Winnipeg in May and that our swim meet is February 11th. You can find the current meet schedule here. As the executive receives more information regarding the swim meets, we will inform you. The year plan has been created, and will be adjusted as needed when swim meet dates are set. It is posted on the website here. What you can look forward to is a general aerobic season start up, building up to 3500 metres at the end of September, and 4500 metres at the end of October. (The metres are based on lane one and an hour and a half workout.)

I am looking forward to working with everyone this year. If you have any questions or comments throughout the year, please contact your coach. Kathy

Swim results from this past summer

Sylvan Lake 3KM race- 24 July

Mike Morrow won his age group (50-59) while Laurie Wallace also won hers (30-39). Rob Davis was also among the race competitors and came 2nd in his age group (40-49) however he felt he was at an unfair disadvantage wearing a full length Fastskin while Mike and Laurie came sporting their wetsuits which are thought to be much faster for open water swimming. We know that next year Rob will have the proper gear!

Fina World Championships- August

Three CMSC members travelled to San Francisco for the Fina World Championships held at Stanford University: Rob Davis, Nancy Davis, and Marjorie Obee. All members put in some excellent swims amongst a meet of 5500 swimmers. Rob's best swim was probably his 800 Free where he took 16 seconds off his time which he had previously won at the World Masters Games in Edmonton (2005). Remarkably this only gave him a top 25 ranking so you could imagine the high caliber swimming at this meet. Nancy Davis posted a good 200 breast (70-74) however regrettably she was out-touched by a petite Japanese woman. You can bet that Nancy won't let that happen again. The "Davis Duo" also decided to swim in the shark infested waters of the bay and narrowly completed the 1 1/4 mile escape from Alcatraz before high tide came rolling in. As for Marjorie Obee, she did us proud by having several top 10 placings in her age group (75-79), even if she was feeling under the weather.
Something to ponder.....

If quitters never win, and winners never quit, then who is the fool who said, "Quit while you're ahead?"
